S. L Kopald Jr. Obituary
S L Kopald, Jr.

Memphis, TN

S L Kopald, Jr., lifelong Memphian, loving support to his family, and dedicated servant to his community, passed away Monday July 9, 2018 at the age of 96. "Kopie" attended Central High School. He graduated from Washington and Lee University, then attended Harvard Business School until interrupted for service in WWII, where he served in the quartermaster corps. While at W&L, he met Lexington native Mimi Daves, and they married in 1946. After the war, Kopie went to work at the HumKo Company, which had been founded by his father and Herb Humphries. He worked at HumKo and its successor companies for his entire career before retiring at the mandatory age of 65. Besides his financial generosity to charity, he served on boards and in offices too numerous to mention, but a partial listing include: President of Rotary, President of Temple Israel, Chairman of SUN and United Way campaigns, Board of Memphis Branch of the Federal Reserve, Board of Tennessee Department of Education, Memphis-Shelby County Planning Commission, Chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party, Chairman of the Board of Hebrew Union College, Board of Directors Washington and Lee University.

Mimi and Kopie celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2016 with family who include brother, Hugh of Vermont; daughter, Nancy of Memphis; son, Steve of Aiken SC; son, Jack and wife, Candy of Port Townsend WA; son, David and wife, Merrily of San Diego CA; also grandchildren, Hunter, Seth, Laura, Hallie, Reece, Troy and Dana; and great-grandchild, Jack.

Memphis has lost a southern gentleman, a man who looked at each person as an individual, who was modest and self-effacing while bringing out the best in others.

Funeral Service will be 3 p.m. Thursday, July 12, in the Danziger Chapel at Temple Israel, 1376 East Massey Road.
