Sally Dockery Banks Obituary
Sally Dockery Banks

Memphis, TN

Sally Dockery Banks was born February 15, 1928 in Memphis, TN; and passed peacefully on March 25, 2017. As a child, Sally was the blond-haired, long legged tag-a-long to her older sister, Mary Frances, and the other older girls who lived on Goodbar Street. She attended Lausanne School after which she attended Casements in Almond Beach, FL and Semple School for Girls in New York City. While in New York, she modeled for Oleg Cassini for three weeks until her mother summoned her home saying, "Southern girls don't do that sort of thing". She was one of thirteen debutants during the 1947 Memphis season.

Sally applied her flair for influence (charm) and determination (strong will) to the needs of animals. She worked tirelessly as president of the Memphis Humane Society. She was proud of her team's accomplishments given the few resources made available to them. Throughout her life, she gave her time, talent and resources to many animal rescue endeavors. To assist in the 550 mile transport of an aged elephant, Sally donated a container air-conditioning system to ensure its safe delivery to the Hohenwald Sanctuary.

She was also and avid supporter of Elmwood Cemetery, the Girl Scouts of America, Alpha Omega Veterans Organization and Meals on Wheels.

Sally loved and accepted all kinds of people. She was a gifted conversationalist, and just plain fun and interesting to be around.

She was the daughter of Love and Mary Haller Banks. A nephew, Richard Alcott of Greenville, MS; a niece Mary Lee Sefried of Combine, TX; a grandnephew Adrian Poole of Collierville, TN and a grandniece Leigh Alcott of Los Angeles, CA; and a great-grandniece Kira Poole of Collierville, TN survive her.

Visitation will be held from two o'clock until five o'clock in the afternoon of Saturday, the 1st of April 2017. A private graveside service will be held in Elmwood Cemetery.

Any contributions may be offered to the Memphis Humane Society in Sally's name.
