Sheldon Saslawsky Obituary
Sheldon Saslawsky

Memphis, TN

Sheldon "Shelly" Saslawsky, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at his home after a long illness.

The son of Bessie and Morris Saslawsky, of blessed memory, Shelly was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 26, 1933. He attended James Madison High School and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1954 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After RPI, Shelley held the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and served as a fighter test pilot in the Tactical Air Command at Bergstrom Airbase in Austin, TX.

After his discharge from the Air Force, Shelly and his wife, Ellen, relocated to the northeast where Shelly was a product engineer for Producto in Bridgeport, CT. In 1978 they moved to Memphis, where Shelly was general manager of a manufacturing plant in Batesville, MS and afterwards established his own machine tool sales company until his retirement in 2001.

As an engineer, Shelly was always using his creativity and knowledge to design products and was the family "fix it" man. He enjoyed tinkering and building and passed that trait on to several of his children and grandchildren. Shelly held numerous patents and was the designer of the "slush mug", a novel frozen drink cup that his grandchildren still enjoy using today.

Shelly was a member of Beth Sholom Synagogue and served on the cemetery committee. He was also a lifelong fan of opera. In his last few years, besides spending time with his children and grandchildren, Shelly enjoyed being with his loyal and caring friends who took him to breakfast on Tuesdays, lunch on Thursdays, dinner on Fridays, and poker on Sunday evenings.

Shelly was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Ellen Weisbarth Saslawsky in 2001, and by his second wife, Kay Usdan Saslawsky in 2015, with whom he shared 13 wonderful years.

Shelly is survived by his children and stepsons, Dr. Mark Saslawsky (Rhonda), Lynn Saslawsky Conroy, Andrew Saslawsky (Betsy), Dr. Greg Usdan (Melody), Dr. Stuart Usdan (Robyn), 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 14 at 11 a.m. at Beth Sholom Memorial Gardens, 2265 Pate Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Shelly's memory to Beth Sholom Synagogue, Temple Israel, or Jewish Family Service at the MJCC.
