Shirley Prothro

Memphis, tn

Shirley Prothro, 94, passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2018. Her family and friends will remember her kindness, thoughtful generosity and marvelous sense of fun. Born in Chattanooga to William Arthur Seagle and Elizabeth Hudson Seagle, Shirley lived on Signal Mountain until her family moved to Memphis. She graduated from Central High School and attended Southwestern where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi. Shirley and her husband, James Thompson (Tommy) Prothro, married in 1955 and moved to Corvallis, Oregon. She began painting, and her bright, flower-filled paintings reflected her joyous personality. Shirley's volunteer work included serving as an advisor to AOPi at Oregon State, and she was an honorary member of UCLA Gold Shield during her years in Los Angeles. After returning to Memphis she renewed her membership at Idlewild Presbyterian Church, also joining the Tuesday Study Club, Arawata Garden Club, and the Memphis Country Club. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband, Tommy, her sister, Elizabeth Seagle Pritchard, and brother, William Finley Seagle. She leaves her nieces and nephews, Shirley Brennan Turner (Robert), William Lewis Pritchard (Charles Parr), both of Memphis, William Alexander Seagle (Kelley) of Cuero, Texas, and Adrienne Seagle Fuston (Danny), of Buford, Georgia, as well as her great-nieces, Jennifer Day Turner, Mandy Fuston Brown (Paul), and great-nephews, Alexander Turner, William Fuston, and Jason Fuston (Sarah). The family is forever grateful to Angela Hoskins, Mattie Hoskins, Jacqueline Madison, and Karon White, who provided not only unstinting care and devotion but also loving companionship for the last seven years.

A graveside service will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery on Monday, June 18 at 10:30 a.m. Memorials would be welcome at Idlewild Presbyterian Church, The Dixon Gallery, or a .
