Velma Davie Peeler born September 19, 1918 died peacefully at home May 16, 2017 at the age of 98 surrounded by her loving family. As a long-time devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Covington, TN, she served in many responsible positions ranging from superintendent of children's Sunday school to chairwoman of the altar guild and was elected "Unsung Hero" by the congregation. She was an avid gardener and founding member of the Covington Garden Club. Since horticulture was one of her passions, she was an environmentalist long before it became trendy. Her philanthropies include: Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, The Food Pantry and many others. She was a voracious reader and a founding member of The Little Book Club. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a caring friend to all she met. Predeceased by parents, Robert B. Davie, Sr. and Velma R. Davie; husband, George H. Peeler, Sr.; son, Robert Davie Peeler; sister, Katheryn D. Shoaf; brother, Robert B. Davie, Jr. Survived by sons, George H. Peeler Jr. (Molly) of Knoxville, TN and William A. Peeler, General Sessions and Juvenile Court Judge of Tipton County (Nancy). Grandchildren, Dr. Huff Peeler, Michael Peeler, Dr. Blair Short, Corrie Metcalf, Drew Peeler, Lauren Bell, Laine Olesen, Dr. Rob Peeler, and Claire Peeler, and fifteen great-grandchildren. The visitation is to be held Wednesday May 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. and the service, Thursday, May 18 at 2 p.m.; both to be held at First United Methodist Church, 145 West Church Avenue, Covington, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the First United Methodist Church Landscaping Fund.
