William Richard Evans Obituary
William Richard Evans

Memphis, tn

William "Richard" Evans, 71, of Memphis, TN was called home Friday, July 28, 2017 following a ten year battle with cancer. He was born January 21, 1946 in Chattanooga, TN the son of Ralph and Julia Henderson Evans.

He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee earning a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, then continued his education with a Master of Business Administration at Georgia College while serving at Robins Air Force Base. Richard proudly served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam war teaching flying in the T-38 jet and finished his career captaining a crew on the B-52. In 1978, he joined the FedEx family. Through his career, he flew the Falcon, 727, and MD-11 and worked in flight standards as a line check airman and a flight instructor. He truly was in his dream job as he ventured around the globe until he retired in 2006. In retirement, he spent many days and hours enjoying the adventures of genealogy. As a genealogist, he served on the Tennessee State Library and Archives and Friends of the Library Board. But, the best times of his retirement were spent with his beloved grandboys at the beach, working on pinewood derby cars, playing games, working in his shop and on cars…

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Morgan P. and Jackson McElhenney, and his sister, Joyce Evans. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Sally Evans; his daughters, Christina Evans of Alexandria, VA, Heather Evans of Powder Springs, GA, and Stephanie Taylor (Robert) of Memphis; his beloved grandboys, Noah McIndoo, Simon McIndoo, Benjamin Taylor, William "Liam" Taylor, and his brother, Sam Evans (Jane) of Maryville, TN.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1, with the Celebration of Life service immediately following at 11:30 a.m. at Independent Presbyterian Church, 4738 Walnut Grove Memphis, TN 38117. A private burial service will be held at a later time in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Independent Presbyterian Church.
