Dr. Cecilia C. Phillips-Binder Obituary
Dr. Cecilia C. Phillips-Binder

Nashville - Dr. Cecilia C. Phillips-Binder---beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister---passed away on September 10, 2019 after an extended illness. She is preceded by her mother (Carylon Williams Phillips), father (Cecil Brown Phillips, Jr.), and sister (Marilyn Phillips Granger). Cecilia is survived by her husband (Dr. Jeffrey L. Binder), sons (John Lawrence Jayne III and Brian Phillips Jayne), sister (Carilyn Phillips Mosley) who was the twin of Marilyn, brother-in-Law (Joseph Mosley), and grandchildren (Theo Dylan Jayne and Morna Wren Elizabeth Jayne).

Cecilia graduated high school as salutatorian of her class from Harding Academy. She graduated summa cum laude from Harding University. As a single mother with two teenage sons, Cecilia undertook the challenge of becoming a clinical psychologist. She obtained her doctorate in psychology from Vanderbilt University in 1995 and established a successful professional practice specializing in psychotherapy with individuals and couples.

During the first decade of her clinical work, Cecilia was active in local professional groups, including Tennessee Women in Medicine and the Nashville Psychological Association. She also had interests apart from her professional work. She and a small group of friends established a regular informal meeting (the "salon") where they enthusiastically discussed topics ranging from philosophy, politics and religion to neuroscience and movies.

After her marriage to Jeff, Cecilia relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where she successfully established a clinical practice with Jeff. After his retirement from an academic position in 2014, Cecilia and he returned to Nashville, where they continued in clinical practice together as Nashville Psychotherapy Consultants. They also rejoined the "salon." Their successful collaboration continued until Cecilia's illness required her to retire.

Cecilia loved the family gatherings on Thanksgiving and Christmas, annually hosted by her sister and brother-in-law Carilyn and Joe Mosley. She and Jeff tried to attend every holiday gathering. She also loved visiting with her sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren.

Cecilia was loved by her husband, family, and friends as a uniquely generous, empathic, and caring person. Her smile lit up and warmed a room, even on cold, dark winter evenings. Her patients valued these same features and thrived when engaged in therapeutic work with Cecilia.

She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held on Friday October 25, 2019 at St Paul's Episcopal Church in Franklin, Tennessee.
