Frederick Lyford Obituary

Frederick Stewart Lyford, 92 1/2 years of age, passed away on February 4, 2021 peacefully in his home with his wife at his side.

He was born June 23, 1928 in Concord, NH and was the son of the late Arthur and Gertrude (Tilton) Lyford.

Fred graduated from Concord High School. While he attended high school, he worked at Capitol Offset in Concord. After graduation he wanted to join his buddies who were going into the service for World War II. He was too young at 16 years of age, so he waited a year and with special permission joined the Navy at 17 years of age. Fred went to Printing School and also Radar School and taught Radar on his return to his ship.

After WWII, Fred returned to Concord and worked for Evans Printing Company in Concord, NH. Shortly after returning he met Mildred Bellman of Penacook, NH. They were married and moved to Granby, Connecticut where they had two children, Arthur and Ellen. Fred worked for Bond Press in Hartford, Connecticut for 11 years where he started an Offset Division for them and later went into sales.

Fred brought his family back to New Hampshire where they settled in Hollis, NH in 1964. After a couple years in sales in the printing industry Fred started his own printing business, The Puritan Press, Inc in 1976. Over his career, Fred was very active in printing organizations serving as president of Printing Industries of New England (PINE), the Hartford Club, the Boston Club and Worcester Club. Fred received the Benjamin Franklin Award in 1988 for Distinguished Service in the Graphic Arts. He was a member of the Blazing Star Eureka Mason Lodge in Concord, NH for over 50 years.

Fred served on the Advisory Committee for Rivier University, was on the Board of the Hunt Home and the Founding Board of the Huntington in Nashua, NH. Fred served on the First Church of Nashua Prudential Committee, the Board of the New Hampshire Charitable Society, and the Social Activities Committee of the Cambridge Center for Adult Education.

After his retirement he served as Volunteer Director of the Beaver Brook Association in Hollis. He also supervised the planting of the new vineyard at Kimball Fruit Farm in Pepperell, MA.

Fred loved to entertain, garden, and was gifted with many skills from carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work and loved to build and repair things around the house for neighbors and friends. He was an avid reader and loved music. Fred always had a wonderful smile for everyone.

Fred was predeceased by his sister Mary and husband Robert Chadwick, sister Jean and her husband Horace Bailey, brothers John and Peter Lyford all from Bow, NH.

Fred leaves his wife of 67 years Mildred, son Dr. Arthur Lyford and wife Sophie Howarth of Hollis, a daughter Ellen and husband Timothy Berry of Friendswood, TX, a granddaughter Renee Silva of Hollis, grandson Jeffrey Lyford and future wife Dr. Ellie Wallace of Reading, MA, and a granddaughter Molly Lyford of Vancouver, WA. He leaves many beloved nieces and nephews as well.

There will be no calling hours or services due to Covid-19.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH

In lieu of flowers those wishing to remember Fred can donate to Beaver Brook Association, 117 Ridge Road, Hollis, NH 03049.
