Margaret Howe Obituary

NEW LONDON – Margaret (Talbot) Howe, 85, of Hilltop Place, died Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at her home.  She was born in Rahway, N.J. on Oct. 18, 1931, the daughter of Duncan A. and Dorothy W. (Rowntree) Talbot.

She graduated from Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y. and earned her Bachelor's degree from Wheelock College in Boston. Margaret married Townsend Howe in 1953 and continued to live in Rahway where she raised two of her sons, John and Paul. Shortly after a move to Redding, Conn. her third son, Craig was born.  While in Connecticut, Margaret owned and operated a nursery school and later taught third grade.  In 1970 the family moved to New London. Childhood memories of Ragged Mountain camp and later camping with her own family in New Hampshire State Parks brought them to the area. They moved to Wilmot in 1978.  She taught 2nd and 5th grades for many years in the Kearsarge School district and while still teaching, Margaret acquired her master's in education from Antioch University in Keen.   Margaret continued her career in education teaching 6th grade math and science before retiring in 1992.  She long supported her husband, Townsend in his business and art career.  After Townsend passed away in 2007, Margaret moved to Hilltop Place in New London.

She was passionate about gardening, and enjoyed mastering many other crafts including pottery, basket weaving, sewing and quilting.  In her later years she continued to engage her mind with continuing education courses writing her own memoirs.    She loved being a grandmother and her grandchildren enjoyed the many activities she would provide when they were young.  Cousins Camp was a particularly fond memory for all her grandchildren, a summer day camp she created in her home in Wilmot one summer.

Margaret is predeceased by her husband, Townsend S. Howe and three brothers, Duncan Talbot II, Jack Talbot and Richard Talbot; and is survived by three sons, John Howe of North Sutton, Paul Howe of Sunapee and Craig and his wife, Kim, of New  London; seven grandchildren include, Christopher, Allison, Andrew, Heather, James, Martha and Griffin; a brother, Edward Talbot of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 14, at 1 p.m. at The First Congregational Church, U.C.C., Wilmot Center.

Private burial will be in Bunker Hill Cemetery, Wilmot.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilmot Community Association, P.O. Box 23, Wilmot, NH 03287 or to Lake Sunapee Region Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 2209, New London, NH 03257.
