Howard Nowell Obituary

Howard Carroll "Howie" Nowell Jr., 83, of Concord passed away unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 4, 2013.

Howard was born in Franklin on Feb. 7, 1930, the son of Howard Carroll "Buster" Nowell Sr. and Laura (Worden) Nowell. He graduated from Franklin High School, Class Of '48 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving his country from 1949 through 1953. He was a Korean War Veteran. Following his time in the service Howard attended UNH, graduating in 1959. He worked for the NH Fish & Game Department for 34 years, first as a Fisheries Biologist and then as Chief of Game and Management Research, eventually retiring in 1992. He was active in the East Concord Community Lamp Lighters Programs and spent many years with the Boy Scouts Pack & Troop 90. He was a member of the Horace Chase Lodge for 44 years and the American Legion Post 0088.

Howard is survived by his wife of 55 years, his best friend and his world, Marie (Stevens) Nowell. He also leaves behind sons, Craig Nowell and his wife, Pattee Ann and Bryan Nowell and his significant other, Michele "Duffy" Sarazin; grandchildren, Melissa Pihl and her husband, Tyler of Newmarket, Paul Nowell and his wife, Kristen of New Mexico, Laura Nowell of Worcester, Mass. and Jeffrey Nowell of Worcester, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Erinn Nowell and Claire Nowell of New Mexico; brothers, Phillip Nowell of Vergennes, Vt. and Clayton Nowell of Wilmot; sisters-in-law, Bernice Nowell of West Andover, and Vera Nowell of Enfield; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, John and Willis Nowell.



The family will receive visitors Thursday, Nov. 7, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, 172 King St. in Boscawen.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m. at the West Congregational Church, 499 N. State St. in Concord.

Inurnment will follow immediately at the New Hampshire State Veteran Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway in Boscawen.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Howard's name may be made to the Concord/Merrimack County SPCA, 130 Washington St., Penacook NH 03303 (online at concordspca.org) or to Daniel Webster Council Boy Scouts of America 571 Holt Avenue, Manchester NH 03109 (online at nhscouting.org).

Husband, father, grandfather, veteran, great neighbor and friend to all. Those lucky enough to follow this man through the woods, got an education for sure. His deep love for the Broken Ground, E.
