1922 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
James E. "Hap" Powell Obituary
Jasper E. "Hap" Powell

WEST LAFAYETTE: Jasper "Hap" E. Powell, age 91, of West Lafayette, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and the Love of his life, Skipper, on Saturday, February 2, 2013, after a short illness. He was born on January 27, 1922, in Athens Township, to the late Cliff and Mildred (Perry) Powell.

Hap worked in the coal mines at the age of 16 in The Plains until he was drafted into the United States Army during WWII. He was a decorated war veteran serving from 1942 to 1948 in the Eastern and Central European Campaign. Hap was very proud to have been a cook in the front lines during the war.

After the war, he worked back in the coal mines, had various truck driving jobs, worked for Clow, and retired from Jones Metal, but most of all, he loved being a caregiver to his wife of 68 years, Virginia Powell.

Hap was a life member of the West Lafayette Nazarene Church and took pride in being a good Christian man. He loved being outdoors, golfing, fishing, reading the Bible and Westerns; he enjoyed singing at church; and spending time with his family. He will be truly loved and missed by all who knew him. On March 20, 1943, Hap married Virginia (Countryman) Powell who preceded him in death on October 31, 2011.

He is survived by his children, Mary "Penny" (Kenny) Phillips of Canton, OH, George "Bill" (Debbie) Powell of Sullivan, IN, and Barbara (David) Babcock of West Lafayette, OH with whom Hap lived with for the last five years; 12 grandchildren, Terry Thornsley, Shelly (Henry) Monti, Jim (Brenda) Phillips, Judy (Willie) Jones, Billy (Chelsey) Powell, Heath (Jami) Powell, Tessa (Ryan) Thompson, Joshua (Jill) Hocter, Melissa (Chris) Lauvray, Jessica (Jason) Schrock, Chrissy (Jessie) Hill, Candy Wentz, and Brad (Nancy) Babcock; 30 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Archer Taylor; two brothers, Frank "Bill" Powell and Tom Powell; many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and one brother-in-law. Along with his parents and wife, Virginia, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Ernie Powell, Jim Powell, and Joe Powell; three sisters, Margret Thompson, Ruth Archer, and Donna Weidger; and grandson, George Phillips.

The family would like to thank College Park, Home Health, Lafayette Pointe, and a very special caregiver, Betty Cox, for the extraordinary care Hap received.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at 1:00 pm at West Lafayette Living Faith Church of the Nazarene, 20166 State Route 751, West Lafayette, Ohio 43845, with Pastor James Lillo officiating. Burial will follow at Coshocton County Memory Gardens, with the Coshocton County Veterans Council preforming military honors. Calling hours will be at the church from 11:00 am until the time of the service on Tuesday.

For those who wish, memorial donations may be made in Hap's name to Health Services of Coshocton County, 230 South 4th Street, Coshocton, Ohio 43812 or to the West Lafayette Living Faith Church of the Nazarene, 20166 State Route 751, West Lafayette, Ohio 43812.
