L. Little Obituary

Life-long Conroe resident, L. D. Little, passed away Friday, October 26, 2012, at his home in Conroe, Texas. L.D. Little was a true son of Montgomery County pioneers. His great-grandfather, Hiram Little, traveled for six months in an oxen-drawn wagon from Illinois and arrived in Montgomery County in January, 1835. Three generations of the Little family were hard-working, productive Montgomery County residents before L.D. was born. L.D. Little was born in Conroe, January 20, 1922, to Samuel Edgar and Mollie Law Little. He graduated from Conroe High School, Class of 1939. In 1945, L.D. Little was the only remaining male at his home able to care for his family's ranch and farm; his brother was serving overseas in the U.S. Army and his elderly father was unable to care for their 400 head of cattle in open range county and 25 milk cows, or the 100 acres of farm land producing corn, cotton, peanuts, and potatoes for market. Then, in August of 1945, L. D. was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served his country for a brief period completing basic training with Company B - 67th Infantry at Camp Wolters, Texas and was a Rifleman squad leader. In November of 1945, he was honorably discharged to return home and continue the farm and ranch duties that in turn served the community. L.D. Little met and married the love of his life, Nola Jean Comstock, in November 1947. Together they made their home and raised their four children in Conroe, Texas. In March of 1949, L.D. Little began his 40-year long career working for the residents of Montgomery County. During those 40 years, he proudly worked for five different County Commissioners in two county precincts. Before retiring he was honored as employee of the month of December 1988. After many years driving heavy equipment, maintaining county roadways, and supervising work crews, he retired as the Road Foreman, Montgomery County Precinct 2. As a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was our hero. He was the ultimate outdoorsman, and, a true cowboy; a man's man who was also tender and sensitive. He was everything to his family; provider, teacher, confidant, caregiver, and a grand storyteller of the past and of his life lived full of adventure, hard work, and complete happiness. He was a loving husband and our mother's caregiver in her last years of life. He taught his children how to live their lives by the example he set for us. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a wondrous source of imagination and creativity and at many times, the very definition of bravery. L.D. Little was pre-deceased by his parents, his loving wife of 53 years, Nola Jean Comstock Little, sisters Lydia Mae Johnson and Opal Beatrice Levins, brother Denzil Little, and his nephew Richard Gerald Dillon. L.D. Little is survived by his sons L. Dawson Little and wife Sarah, of Conroe, Texas, Samuel R. Little of Conroe, Texas, daughters Laura L. Byrum and husband Steve of Conroe, Texas and LaDorise Sprecher and husband Mike of Willis, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren Aubree Q. Hutchins, Sarah Taylor Little, James Wesley Little, Stephanie Jean Byrum-Rivas and husband Daniel, Samantha Lynne Byrum and fiancé Chandler Collins, and Michel Scott Byrum, and his great-granddaughters Joelie Marie Hutchins and Lauren Danielle Rivas. His sister Martha Louise Welschhans, nephew Billy S. Little, nieces Evelyn F. Johnson Frnka, and Trina Welschhans Withrow also survive him. Honorary pallbearers are Aubree Q. Hutchins, James Wesley Little, Michel Scott Byrum, Alan Frnka, Ashley Frnka, and Ryan Cooper. Visitation with the family will be held 6-8 PM on Monday, October 29 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Willis. Graveside Services are scheduled for 10 AM on Tuesday, October 30 at Oakwood Cemetery in Conroe. You are invited to leave a written condolence to the family at www.shmfh.com.

Dawson, Laura, LaDoris and Sam....
I learned of your father's death today
and want to send my condolences and on
behalf of all of the members of the Billy Little family. Your Father was a
man of integrity and was well respected.
I had the privilege of working with your Mom, Jean, when I was a young bride. She taught me how to cook and often gave me tips on caring for my
baby, Daintee, who is now 39 years old.
May God bless you and keep you in his hands as you mourn the loss of your beloved Dad.
