LaVerne, as she was known to her many friends and family, went to her eternal heavenly home on Saturday, May 9, 2015. LaVerne had struggled with her health for several years until finally peacefully leaving this life's difficulties to meet her Savior face-to-face. She was born on January 28, 1937 in Enon, Texas to Arlie Eugene and Maggie Marie Powell. She was the loving wife of 62 years to Robert A. Mahaffey, who survives her. In addition to her parents, LaVerne was preceded in death by her brother, Glen Powell and a sister, Anita Glasgow. Another sister, Barbara Davis survives her. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Mahaffey Mims and Charlotte's daughter Laura. Surviving family members include her children, Gary Mahaffey and his wife Gail, Carol Mahaffey Lumpkin Merillat and her husband A.P, Darlene Mahaffey Carter and her husband Tom and Marc Mahaffey and his wife Denise. LaVerne's grandchildren are April Mims, Ryan Lumpkin and his wife Maryam, Jason Lumpkin and his wife Michelle, Christopher Mahaffey and his wife Jackalyn, Derek Mahaffey, Andrew Mahaffey, Matt Carter, Leah Carter Adair and her husband Mitchell and Hannah Carter Robinson and her husband Nolan. LaVerne's great grandchildren are Bishop, Aven and Ronin Lumpkin, Grant Adair and Claire Audrey Mahaffey. LaVerne was a long time resident of Conroe and was active in the various churches she attended throughout her life. She was also a past children's teacher of Bible Study Fellowship. She enjoyed numerous opportunities over the years to sing with her family at revivals and ministry functions and was a dedicated, faithful volunteer at the mission outreach center sponsored by Second Baptist Church North Campus. LaVerne loved to cook and she was an excellent seamstress, creating high-quality clothing and fabric works for her friends and loved ones over the years. She was a committed Christian and woman of exceptional faith and integrity. Although she will be sorely missed, her legacy of faith and spiritual character will live on. Visitation will be at Cashner Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 from 6-8pm. Funeral Service will be in the Cashner Colonial Chapel on Thursday, May 14, 2015, at 10am with Bro. Larry Dean. I'm so sorry to hear about Laverne passing away. My prayers are with all of you. I pray that God will comfort you and sustain you as only He can. My mind goes back to the fun times we had singing together and going over all the music and learning new songs together. I love and cherish every minute of those times. Memories are one of God's gifts and help get us through difficult times. Love you and pray for you.

Dear R.A. and family, I was saddened to hear earlier that Laverne was ill and now of her passing. However, just as she loved the Lord and served Him so faithfully, I am sure she is in His presence. Your family has always been a part of the "Lighthouse" for us folks at Mims, and we love your whole family. I pray that God will give you peace, strength, and joy knowing that you will once again meet Laverne and be in the presence of Jesus with her. Your sister in Christ.

I can only imagine the JOYOUS time she is having as she has started singing the song that never ends! Worthy is the Lamb!! The Mahaffey family has always been a blessing to know, and we pray that God the father, hold you close, allow for the tears, and remind you all, of the promise of that great family reunion.

Aunt La Verne was a sweet and caring Christian woman who practiced her faith everyday. She was in every sense of the word a "lady". I have many memories of her as I grew up and I always thought she was beautiful inside and out. She has a great sense of humor and I will miss her at the family reunions where I saw her last. She was very special.
