On January 31,1920 in Calvert, Texas, Alexander James Jones was born, he was the seventh of nine children born to Rev. Joe and Mattie Jones. Alexander was raised and received his formal education in Robertson County. He accepted the Lord Jesus christ and received his early training at an early age. He accepted the call to the ministry. He was the pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church for over fifty two years and He served his calling for a total of seventy two years. He left Calvert to join the Civil Conservation Corps. for two years. He enterd the United States Navy, where he served his country with honor during World War II aboard the Air Craft Carrier U.S.S. Saratogar, has the Chaplain for the Negro soldiers and was the kitchen officer (mess officer.) During his service in the military he was married to Maxie Bernice Irving (1941) to this union two sons were born: Alexander Jr. and Leodia Jones. He moved to Conroe Texas in 1946 where he attended Conroe Industrial College. He received a degree in Theology and Ministry also an honorary Dr's degree in Ministry. On September 24, 1950 he married Betty Mae Hewitt, to this union two children: Leonard and Valerie Jones. He worked for various companies in the Conroe Community and retired from Shepherd Furniture Company. He also worked with The Montogomery County Sherif and Probationer Office Dept. as a counselor to trouble youths. Rev. A.J. Jones is preceded in death by his wife Mrs. Betty Mae Jones, parents Rev. Joe and Mrs. Mattie Jones, two brothers Frank and Jack Jones, five sisters Elzadie Cox, Bertha Burns, Thelma Johnson, Ruth Picking and Ollistine Reed. Left to cherish his memories three sons Alexander (Bobbie) Jones Jr., Leodia (Norma) Jones, Leonard Jones, one daughter Valerie Price, one sister Emma Scales, eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, fifteen great-great-grandchildren, New Bethel Church Family and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. A Season of Worship and Praise Celebrating the Life Of Rev. Alexander James Jones Sr. will be held on Saturday August 27, 2011. Visitation will be held from 10-11am. Funeral Service will begin at 11am. Both services will be held at Conroe Bible Fellowship Church 1035 Airport Rd. Conroe, Texas 77301. Pastor Will Graves Jr., Officiating.
