Alton Floyd "BIG AL" Allen was born May 28th 1929 in Many Louisiana to John Tryon and Amanda Massey Allen. His family moved to Old London, Texas to work the East Texas oil boom in the early 1930's. Al attended school at New London, Texas and was present during the New London School explosion in 1937 that killed over 295 students and teachers. Al joined the Navy, serving in Naval Intelligence in Japan, Korea, Hawaii and Alaska before returning to attend College at Kilgore Junior College and pursue a successful career with Shell Oil Company. Al enjoyed hunting, fishing and organized sports. He caught sailfish and, blue marlin offshore and played the guard position on his Navy basketball team, but nothing surpassed his passion for golf. A self-taught golfer, he excelled on the course, competing in tournaments across East Texas. He became club champion of multiple courses and played competitive matches with the likes of Miller Barber, Homero Blancas, Jackie Cupit, Sandy Lyle and Don January. In his later years Al missed qualifying for a senior tour event by a single stroke and was able to shoot his age into his eighties. Respected by everyone, Al was a man of unquestioned integrity. Always striving to help others, he never failed to ask "Is there anything I can do for you?" A dedicated husband, father and patient teacher, Al supported Jerry with love and kindness and guided his three sons to be true gentlemen in his likeness. His journey to kneel in the Lord's presence was walked in absolute peace made possible by his sincere faith as a member of the Conroe Church of Christ. Al is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Jerry Towery Allen, sons; Tim Allen (Sonia Mayo) of Friendswood, Don Allen (Brenda) of Texas City and Russell Allen (Tracy) of Houston. Grandchildren; Amanda Allen of Lampasas, Kandace Russell (Tony) of Huntsville, Marina Goudeau of Hutto, Texas, Hanna Hilts (Austin), Mattie Mayo and Jake Mayo. Great Grandchildren; Merideth Allen, Mattie Allen, Ryleigh Allen, Dylan Goudeau, Josh Russell, Jayden Russell, Bella Russell and Austin Hilts Jr. Al was preceded in death by his father, John Allen; mother Amanda Allen; brother M.T.
