born in Normangee, Texas on March 25, 1925 went to be with the Lord on June 16, 2016. Youngest son of sixteen children, born to Washington and Jennie Mathis of Madisonville, Texas, he graduated from Normangee High School in Normangee, Texas. He served in the Navy and was a WWII Veteran. He was a lifelong member of the Masons. After serving his country he met and married the love of his life, Mary Helena Trout in San Benito, Texas in 1952. Burtis retired from AT&T in 1980 after thirty five years of service. He was an active member of Alana Lane Baptist Church in Spring, Texas and served as Deacon. He enjoyed his home, being with family, serving in the church, eating Mary's cooking, watching sports and reading. Some of his famous words we all enjoyed were "they claim that...", "it's over yonder", and "I swannee". His greatest joy was his family and he will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, daddy and papaw. Mr. Mathis is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years. He is survived by four children, eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. They are his daughter Cathy Lewis and children: Michelle and husband Michael Barron and their children Cody and Allie; Christi Ben and her children Chasyti, Kahlani and Christopher; Hollis Little and wife Lisa and their children Mikayla, Grace, and Chloe: his son Billy Tullos and his daughter Lisa and husband Robert Jolly and their children Kevin and Taylor: his daughter Charlotte and husband Steve Randall and their children Benjamin Randall and wife Stephanie and son Preston; Laura and her husband Brent Everson and their children Emily and Alexa: and, his daughter Sharon and husband Phil Harrold and their children Shana and husband Bobby Creel and son Steven Vasquez; Ryan Harrold and wife Heather and their children Elizabeth, Nicholas, and Connor. Mr. Mathis is survived by his brother Keith Mathis, 97. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and 11 brothers. Visitation will be held at Metcalf Funeral Directors, 1801 E. White Oak Terrace, Conroe, TX from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Sunday, June 19, 2016. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 20, 2016 at 10 am at Alana Baptist Church, 311 Alana Ln, Spring, TX. With interment at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery 13102 North Freeway, Houston, Texas.
