Donald "Don" Lee Hegarty, a retired helicopter mechanic, computer engineer, proud and patriotic Texan, peacefully went to be with the Lord on September 27,2016 at 82 years old surrounded by his loving family at home.

Don was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, on November 12, 1933 to John and Hellen Hegarty. He graduated from Jacksonville High School and went straight to Bradley University to pursue electrical engineering and graduated with an associate's degree. In 1953, he joined the United States Army after proudly being drafted which he later said was one of his most honorable accomplishments in life. He went on to being a helicopter mechanic with Leer where he was able to pursue his love of travel as he was needed all over the country.

On September 15, 1961 he married Virginia "Ginny" Yarbrough where he met 5 months earlier on a blind date in Birmingham, Alabama, fell in love and spent the next 55 years as a devoted and loving husband and father to his two children. He and Ginny settled down in Houston, TX to raise their children, Todd and Tonya Hegarty. Don became a computer engineer and was so proud to play a major role in the technology designed for the original Star Wars film which became one of the all-time top film franchises. He and Ginny continued their love of travel and was blessed with the opportunity to visit many countries around the world. He had a love of baseball and spent most of his adult life as the head coach mentoring his son, Todd. He proudly claimed the Astrodome, home of his favorite team, the Astros as the 8th wonder of the world. We can humbly say that Don made a lasting impression on everyone he met with his charm, which was only surpassed by the size of his heart. His kindness, generosity, honor, humor and patriotism for his country is what his friends and family will remember most.

Don will forever be loved by those he has left behind. He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia "Ginny" Hegarty; his children, Todd Hegarty and Tonya Scanlin; son-in-law, David Scanlin; his grandchild, Brylie Cantu; his sister, Sharon Restelli and brother-in-law, Victor Restelli and many other family members and friends. He is predeceased by his father, John Hegarty; his mother, Hellen Hegarty; grandfather, Carl Liter and grandmother, Mary Liter.

A memorial service to celebrate Don's life is scheduled for 3:00pm on October 8, 2016 at Metcalf Funeral Directors in Conroe, TX. Pastor Jerry Everage will officiate. Flowers and condolences may be offered at 1801 E White Oak Terrace, Conroe, TX 77304.
