Edwin D. Smith, 81, of Montgomery, Texas passed away peacefully the morning of May 6th 2016 after a long and happy life that was always filled with laughter.

Ed was born on August 22, 1934 in Dangerfield Texas. He spent most of his early years in Mt. Pleasant, Texas where he attended high school and met his beloved Shirley whom he was married to for 40 years.

Ed & Shirley relocated to Wichita Falls, Texas so he could attend college at Midwestern State University. Upon graduation they moved to Houston where Ed had a long career with State Farm and raised a family. Upon retirement Montgomery, Texas became his home.

The second half of his working life was spent at Westland Oil and Ed enjoyed this chapter of his life very much.

Ed was known for his storytelling and his unique ability to remember every joke he ever heard. Humor and a good BBQ were always a large part of his life.

Ed is survived by his children, Kelly Reed (David), Blake Smith (Linda), his pride and joy grandson, Marshall Smith and sister Gloria Thacker. In addition he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews all of which brought to him great joy.

He was predeceased by wife Shirley, parents HJ and Tennie Smith; sisters Mary Lee, Evelyn, and Terry and brothers Marshall, Shepherd and Calvin.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life on Monday, May 9, 2016 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Montgomery with visitation at 10:00am and services at 11:00am. Memorial gifts may be directed to Montgomery United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 1330 Montgomery, Texas 77356 - in memo of check "Food Bank".
