George William Bashen, born May 23, 1924, in Oak Park, Illinois went to Heaven on November 1, 2016 in Conroe at the age of 92.

He attended school in Oak Park, Illinois, and graduated in 1942 from Oak Park High School. He attended Colorado School of Mines in 1942 for two years before joining the Army. After the war, he returned to Colorado School of Mines and graduated in 1948 with a degree in Geological Engineering. He was a Sigma Nu member. He immediately went to work as a Geologist for Shell Oil Company where he met his wife Betty Jeanne Harris. They married in 1954 and adopted three children. George and Betty moved to April Sound to enjoy Lake Conroe where he enjoyed spending his time fishing, playing chess by mail, running, and walking his favorite dogs. He discovered running and was an avid runner for 30 years, running 26 marathons and several ultra- marathons throughout the United States and Europe. He enjoyed teaching children as evident by his teaching Sunday school for 50 years as well as being a volunteer math tutor at Hauke Alternative School in Conroe for 20 years. He was an active member of the Street Committee in April Sound for many years.

George was preceded in death by his parents George Bergen Bashen and Elspeth Patterson Bashen and his sisters Betty Bashen Wier and Janet Bashen Switzer. He is survived by his loving family: wife of 62 years, Betty Bashen; daughter, Elizabeth Durham and husband, Steve; son, Steve Bashen and wife, Janet ; daughter, Nancy Bashen; 4 grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren with which he loved dearly ; niece, Kay Rains; nephews Dan Wier, and wife Sheila, along with their son and daughter and 3 grandchildren; Gil Beamsley; Alan Wier and wife, Anna Maria along with 2 children; nieces Melissa Tschoertner and husband, Wayne along with 3 children, and Jean Harris.

Memorial Services for George William Bashen will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 1:00 PM in The Chapel at First United Methodist Church in Conroe, Texas. In lieu of flowers the family asks for contributions to Hauke High School in honor of George Bashen scholarship fund.
