On February 24 2018, Hattie Roberta (Rethwisch) Remley went to her eternal home with her Lord and Savior. She was born November 25, 1929, in Crystal City, Missouri, to Carl and Hallie Rethwisch. She was the youngest of three children. At an early age, she developed a love for music. She went to Hannibal LaGrange College and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in education and music. While at Hannibal Lagrange, she met her future husband, Melvin Remley. Upon his discharge from the Army in Korea, they married in 1953. She taught school until they moved to Conroe, Texas in 1955. She became the organist at First Baptist Church and began to teach piano lessons. They started their family in 1960. For many years, she faithfully served in these capacities and ministered to many people in a loving and understated manner. Roberta was an accomplished pianist, pipe organist and violinist. She used her talents to play piano and organ at First Baptist Church, and to teach piano lessons. She also played the organ for many weddings, funerals and at banks during the Christmas season. She gave her time to help area churches who needed a pianist for special services. Roberta also loved books, not only to read herself but to inspire other people. This led her to take over the library at First Baptist Church. She also helped other churches start libraries. She also worked at the Christian bookstore. Her favorite graduation gift to give was My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers. Roberta was also an avid writer. She sent many short notes and letters to many people to encourage them. This was not so easy without smartphones. Roberta was a lover of nature. She took special pleasure in birds, butterflies, sea shells, the beach and dandelions (which many reject as weeds). She loved to sit outside and admire God's handiwork. Roberta's loved God and served him in understated ways. She mentored several women going through difficult times, who were rejected many. She handed out Bibles to everyone who came to the garage sale she ran for several years. Even in her last days, she reminded everyone who came into contact with her of the love of God and how Jesus made it possible for us to be righteous in God's eyes. For a woman of small stature, she made eternal impacts on many people. She understood what Jesus was referring to in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:19-21) when He urged us to store our treasures in heaven. She is now enjoying those treasures, the people she invested in while on earth. Roberta was a faithful wife, loving mother, beloved sister, encouraging aunt and loyal friend. Roberta is now with family members she loved dearly; her parents Carl and Hallie Rethwisch, her sister Eileen (Feggy) Sewald, her brother Mart (Wanda) Rethwisch, her husband Melvin and her nieces Gay Sewald Watkins and Janelle Rethwisch. She is survived by her son Jay (Elaine) Remley, her grandson, Collin, her daughter Eileen Remley, her nieces Ann Sewald (Jim) Overall, Arlinda Rethwisch (Travis) Coleman, Retha Rethwisch (Charlie) Brown and nephews, Marty (Rita) Sewald, Marty (Carrie) Rethwisch and Curtis (Laura) Rethwisch. The family wishes to thank the many caregivers Roberta had in her last years on earth: the staffs at Helen's Care Cottage, Montgomery County Assisted Living, Vantage Hospice and Heritage Oaks Assisted Living. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Roberta's life, Friday, April 6th at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church in Conroe, Texas. In lieu of flowers, honor Roberta with memorial to Samaritan's Purse or KSBJ Radio. You are invited to view our webpage and leave written tributes to the family at cashnerconroe.com
