Herman Isaac "Ike" Hargraves was born February 11, 1926 in Beaumont, TX and went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 1, 2017 at the age of 91. Ike joined the United States Navy in 1942 at the age of 16. He was a World War II vet and served his country proudly. His service during World War II included serving in the Aleutian Islands aboard the USS Ramsay and serving in New Guinea aboard the USS Fanshaw Bay. He also served during the Korean War aboard the hospital ship the USS Haven which received two battle stars for action off Inchon and Pusan. Ike traveled the world for 40 years working for Brown & Root, living in the Dominican Republic, Scotland and Saudi Arabia. He retired from Brown & Root in the early 90's. Ike loved to BBQ and for many years he was a cook for the Roadrunner BBQ team at the Montgomery County Fair. He was a life-long avid golfer and enjoyed working at Bentwater Country Club as a starter for more than ten years. He enjoyed wood working, gardening, especially tending to his many camellias. Ike was a member of The Ark Church in Conroe. He was one of the founding members of the Lone Star Veterans group and was an active member in their weekly meetings. He was honored to be a part of this group and enjoyed travelling to Arlington National Cemetery and the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. as part of the Honor Flight Program. Ike was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edward Hargraves and Dora Anderson Hargraves, his brother Charles Hargraves and his sisters, Alice Madsen and Ida Crosby. Ike is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Hargraves, his sons Bill O'Connell, wife Sandy and Ray Hargraves, wife Denise, and his grandchildren Laura Carl, husband Michael, and Cheyenne Hargraves. He is also survived by his brother-in-law R.L. Dodson, sister-in-law Peggy Deisher, husband John, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00pm Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Cashner Funeral Home, 801 Teas Rd. in Conroe. Funeral Services will begin at 11:30am on Friday, April 7, 2017 at Cashner Funeral Home with Dr. John Deisher, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at 2:15pm at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038. Pallbearers for the service will be Dan Howell, Stacy Crosby, Jay Killgo, Karl Richter, Jack McClanahan and Garry Bynum. Immediately following the graveside service, the family will receive guests for a reception to celebrate Ike's life at the Veterans Hall, 13614 Poplar Circle, Conroe TX 77304.
