Jackie Barker, 84 went to her heavenly home on Saturday, January 28. She was born in Manhattan, Kansas on October 7, 1927. She married Raleigh E Barker on April 24, 1953 and was married to him for 56 years before his death.

She graduated from University of Missouri, Kansas City in 1951. Early in her career, she was an office manager of several different businesses in Kansas City. In 1974, she followed her husband, Raleigh to Houston, Texas where she was an office manager of a temperature controls company and a computer consulting company. Upon retirement, she and her husband Raleigh made their home in April Sound where she changed her career to a feature writer. She wrote "This week in Montgomery County" for the Houston Chronicle. She wrote the "April Sound Upbeat" column for the Montgomery County News. Additionally, she was a freelance writer for several other publications.

Among her accomplishments, Jackie was a charter member of the Lake Conroe Area Republican Women and a member of the Board of Directors. She received special recognition for her work publicizing the Lake Conroe Chapter of the National Assistance League. She was the first recipient of the "Woman of the Year" by the April Sound Ladies Association. In 2001, she was honored again by the April Sound Ladies Association receiving the April Sound Laureate. In 2010, Jackie received the "Tribute to Women" state wide award from the Texas Federation of Republican Women for her work supporting the Republican Party. In 2011, she received the Lifetime Achievement award from the Montgomery County Performing Arts Society for her service.

Jackie was an active member of the April Sound Ladies Association, the Montgomery County Performing Arts Society, the Communications Board of the April Sound Property Owners Association. Additional involvement included publicizing events for the April Sound Church and the Helping Hands Golf Tournament.

In her early years in Montgomery County, she was an active board member of the Friends of the West Branch Library in Montgomery County and the Montgomery Historical Society. She was an avid collector antiques.

She is survived by her son Keith and his wife Elisabeth, daughter Kay Schwob and her husband Mark, grandchildren Rebecca Mozcygemba and her husband Andrew, Isabel Barker, Heaston Schwob, Hunter Schwob, Sebastian Barker and great granddaughter Petra Moczygemba.

Visitation with the family will be on Friday, Feb. 3 at Metcalf Funeral Home from 5 pm - 7 pm. The memorial service will be on Saturday, February 4 at the April Sound Church, located at 67 ½ April Wind South, at 11 am followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. A private interment will be held at Forest Park-The Woodlands.
