John E. Burge was born January 26, 1933 in Alvin, Texas and passed away July 4, 2017 in Conroe, Texas at the age of 84. John was preceded in death by his parents, Julius Eugene Burge and Elsie Christine Matcek Burge, and by two brothers, Charles Allen Burge and George Wayne Burge. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Subeth Carter Burge of Conroe, Texas; children: John Edwin Burge and husband Michael Steiner of Palm Springs, California, Kristi Suzanne Brookshire and husband Van of Evergreen, Texas and David E. Burge and wife Linda of Conroe, Texas; brother, James Herbert Burge and wife Judy of Rockport, Texas; grandchildren: Katherine Suzanne Brookshire, Sarah Bethany Brookshire, Joshua Van Brookshire and Chloe Elizabeth Burge; step grandchildren: Amber Bingham Dixon, Freddie Bingham and Savannah Bingham; step great grandchildren; Ryleigh Dixon, Zoey Dixon and Charlee Dixon; and numerous other relatives and a host of friends. John graduated from Alvin High School in 1951 and from Sam Houston State University in 1954. He served in the US Army from 1955 until 1957 when he returned to college for post graduate work. On April 3, 1958, John married Subeth Carter. Their new life together started with their first home in Hobbs, New Mexico while working for Hughes Tool Company. They returned to Texas on July 4, 1960 working with Great Southern Life. Shortly afterwards, he found his calling in the Savings and Loan industry. Within a couple of years, he accepted a job with University Savings and Loan opening a branch in Conroe. John's first day and opening day, was November 22, 1963, the day John F Kennedy was assassinated. John later worked for (NCNB) Nations Bank, Woodforest Bank, and First Financial Bank. John became involved with many service organizations. The Conroe Noon Lions Club where he served as Treasure, Vice President, and President. He went on to also serve as their District Governor. Where he received the Melvin Jones award for outstanding service. John also served on the City of Conroe Parks Board for over 30 years, the Montgomery County Fair Board, Served on the Transportation Committee for The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, President of the Oscar Johnson Community Center Board, The Montgomery County Appraisal Board, The Roads Committee, past President of the Conroe Chamber of Commerce. He was a reservist with the Conroe Police Department. He later served as Captain of the Montgomery County Sheriffs Reserve until he retired in 2016 with over 50 years in law enforcement. John loved his family and friends. He gave all he could to the future of Conroe and this great community. Visitation will be at Cashner Funeral Home on Friday, July 7, 2017 from 5-7pm. Celebration of Life service will be 10:00a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Conroe, Texas. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
