John Joseph Spokes lost his battle with cancer on October 2nd, 2012 at the age of 62 in The Woodlands, Texas. A devoted husband and father, John lived his life selflessly for God and his family, and thus he fought bravely until the end.

Born and raised in New Orleans, John's higher education included two degrees: one in engineering sciences from The University of New Orleans and the other, a masters in petroleum engineering from his beloved alma mater, Louisiana State University. John counted down the days until football season where he never missed the chance to cheer on his favorite team, the LSU Tigers. During college and soon after, he served his country in the US Naval Reserves and often joked that "if the enemy ever invaded Lake Ponchartrain, they didn't stand a chance!"

After a 40-year career working for the USGS, Texaco, Chevron and most recently The Hess Corporation, John's contributions to the field of petroleum engineering were sincere and valuable. He was truly passionate about his work. His proudest accomplishment however, was raising his two sons. His favorite past times included playing golf with his boys, watching them challenge each other to a match on the tennis court and coaching them at the batting cages.

A devout Catholic, John recently dedicated much of his time to the Spiritual Direction Program at The Cenacle Retreat House in Houston Texas. His goal was to share his faith and inspire others to seek knowledge about their own Christian spirituality.

He joins his father, John Joseph Spokes, Sr. and mother Florence Dusang Spokes in the company of God. He leaves behind his cherished family: his beloved wife of 41 years Judith Spokes; his eldest son John Jason Spokes and daughter-in-law Emily Spokes; his youngest son James Andrew Spokes and daughter-in-law Christen Nettles and his sister Sharon Loeb and her sons and daughter and their families.

Services for John Spokes will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in The Woodlands on Thursday, October 4th at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting donations be made to Catholic Relief Services (crs.org), a charitable organization John supported.
