John "Joe" Dunlap Nichols died on December 1, 2013 after battling lung cancer for the past eight months. He was 77 years old at the time of his death.

Joe was born on June 21, 1936 in Red River, SC to Iva Mae Shaw and Jesse Cicero Nichols. He grew up in Fort Mill, SC where he would later return to raise his family. He was the fourth of five children. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Wilma; a son, Mark and his wife Dene Nichols; a son, Mike Nichols; a daughter, Peggy and her husband Russell Truluck; four grand children, Michael Nichols, James Nichols, Elisabeth Nichols, and Ashley Truluck; a great granddaughter Bella Nichols.

Joe graduated from Fort Mill High School and joined the Navy serving honorably for four years. Stationed in Mayport, FL on the Aircraft Carrier USS Saratoga, he repaired airplane electrical systems. Joe began to work for IBM in 1962 repairing office equipment. He would spend the next 36 years doing work that he loved, twenty five of those years with IBM.

Joe was a strong Christian and loved his Lord and Savior. He was active as a Deacon for Fort Mill First Baptist Church and RiverPointe Baptist Church. He was a dedicated Sunday School Teacher and Royal Ambassador Leader. He helped to build churches across the nation as a member of Campers on Mission.

A celebration of Joe's life will be held on December 21, 2013 at 2 pm at RiverPointe Baptist Church, 700 Gladstell Road, Conroe, TX 77304. The family will receive visitors at a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to RiverPointe Baptist Church Debt Retirement Fund.
