Graveside funeral services for Mr. John Thomas Gates, 83, of the Deadwood Community will be 10:00 a.m. Monday June, 3, 2013 at the Old Prospect Cemetery with Rev. Chester Farmer officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be Sunday, June 2, 2013 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mr. Gates died peacefully May 29, 2013 in Carthage, Texas.

Mr. John Thomas Gates was born February 14, 1930 in Panola, Texas to the marriage of James Tillit and Mineola McLane Gates. He was raised and attended schools in rural Panola, Texas. John married Emma Jean Mills June 7, 1945 and together they celebrated 64 years of marriage until her death in 2010. John and Emma moved to Deadwood from Conroe, Texas after retiring from his business, Gates Saw Company he owned and operated over 40 years. He loved cattle and ranching at his J&E Ranch. Mr. Gates was a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church. He is also preceded in death by his parents and brother, Smith Gates, sisters, Avery Taylor and Opal Johnson.

Mr. Gates is survived by his daughters, Barbara Watson and husband Russell of Montgomery and Judy Davis and husband Ray of Deadwood, son, Tom Gates and wife Debbie, of Hideaway; grandchildren, Rachel Watson of Conroe, Jason Watson and wife Stacie of College Station, Mandy Pugh and husband Jerry of Bullard, Jeremy Davis and wife Kristen of Henderson, Aaron Gates and wife Melissa of Spring; great grandchildren, Emma and Adam Isaacks, Tyler and Colton Watson, Matthew and Mina Davis, Sean and Ryan Gates, Peyton Young and Kobe Daniels; siblings, Hice Gates and wife Bea of Shreveport, Louisiana and Harmon Gates and wife Betty of Cleveland; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Watson, Tyler Watson, Colton Watson, Jeremy Davis, Matthew Davis, Adam Isaacks, Jerry Pugh and Gates Aaron.
