Dr. Knox McLeod Broom, Jr. passed peacefully at home in Greensboro, NC surrounded by his daughters on June 24, 2014. A native of Jackson, MS, he was born on April 23, 1936, to Knox M. Broom, Sr. and Karon C. Broom. He met his late wife of 45 years, Margaret Covington, at Univ. of Southern Mississippi. After graduating with bachelor degrees in chemistry and math he attended the Univ. of Arkansas earning a MS in physics and Ph.D.in chemistry in 1963. He began his career in California with the Atomic Energy Comm. and transferred to Washington DC. In 1967 he went into the private sector with Louisiana Power & Light in New Orleans and in 1972 joined Brown & Root in Houston where he continued his career as a nuclear physicist/engineer. In 1987, he joined Daniel Int'l Const. in Greenville,SC and then Duke Energy/Fluor Daniel in Charlotte, NC, pursuing power generating oppor tunities in the US and abroad. He was Director of Sales, Energy and Chemicals with Fluor Corp when he retired in 2003, but continued as a consultant with Flour Daniel until final retirement in 2010. He enjoyed decades of golf rounds and cards with dear friends in Conroe, Easley and Greensboro. In later years he volunteered at Barnabas Network refurbishing furniture for the less fortunate and was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Rotary Club of Greensboro and received the Joseph M. Bryan Rotarian of the Year Award. He was honored to have recently been granted Honorary Lifetime Membership to his Rotary. Knox was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Leland B.Curtis and Thomas V. Curtis, and his sisters, June B. Brumfield and Peggy B. Weber. He is survived by his daughters, Lyn Broom Peraldo of Greensboro, NC, and Shea Broom Pitlik, and her husband, Mike Pitlik of Lake Forest, CA; his grandchildren, Chandler Knox Peraldo, Leah Shea Peraldo, Briley Lyn Pitlik and Hayden Shea Pitlik, his cousin, Gloria Mitchell, the Covington, Grubbs and Drakefamilies, his wife of six years, Judy Patten Broom, and her children and grand-children. His ashes will be interred at a graveside remembrance at Wayne County Cemetery, 1305 Skyland Dr., Waynesboro MS, at 1:00 p.m. on August 23, 2014, and family and friends will gather at the home of Mary and Juston Garner, 115 Tallon's Pt.
