Laura Jean Blunk (née Nelson), of The Woodlands, TX, passed away on May 24 th , 2017 at the age of 61 in the presence of her sons. Laura was known as a strong woman, a loving wife, and a devoted mother.

She was born in Grand Junction, CO on April 15 th , 1956 and spent her formative years all over the world including Maracaibo, Venezuela and Midland, TX where Laura excelled in her career as a competitive swimmer. While in high school she tried out for the 1972 Olympic Games, and had she lived in any country other than the US she would have qualified. Her family later moved to Denver, CO and she graduated from Cherry Creek High School in 1974.

Laura received one of the first athletic scholarships for women under Title IX to attend the University of Arizona where she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business in 1977. A year later, she met her best friend and future husband Howard while they both worked at Chevron's Walnut Creek offices. In 1979, they eloped and moved to Denver, CO. After the birth of their first son Byron in 1983, Laura dedicated herself to being a full-time mother. Laura and her family moved to Texas in 1986 where her second son Michael was born soon after.

In 1992, the entire family relocated to London, England where they toured multiple European countries and a year later, moved back stateside to The Woodlands, TX. In 1998, she re-entered the workforce as the Assistant Librarian at Mitchell Intermediate School, which her son Michael attended. She simultaneously continued to play an active role in her children's extracurriculars from being involved in the PTA to organizing the annual raffle for the Oak Ridge High School Band Boosters while Byron was a member of the band.

In 1999, Laura joined Howard in forming OGC Consulting, a specialized oil and gas consulting firm focused on joint venture audit support in The Woodlands, TX. Together they grew their business into one of the leading firms in the industry. As a highly skilled accountant and administrator, she was instrumental in helping OGC undertake contracts from all major oil and gas companies and worked with numerous subcontractors in the field. After Howard's unexpected death, Laura took over OGC operations by herself which she continued to successfully run up to her passing.

Laura was predeceased by her husband Howard in 2013, her parents Leonard and Dorothy Nelson in 2004 and 2010 respectively, her sister Cynthia in 1994, and her granddaughter Katura in 2012. She leaves behind her son Byron, his wife Nicole, and grandson Joseph; her son Michael and his fiancé Anusha J.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests you make a donation to Planned Parenthood in her name, as Laura was a fierce defender of women's rights and equality her entire life. This way you'll keep the fight alive for her.
