Lena Mae Soehnge Coates was born March 1, 1927 in Mathis, Texas to Adolph William and Orpha James Soehnge. Also born to Adolph and Orpha were two brothers, Walter Ernest Soehnge and Leroy Adoph Soehnge. At the early death of both their parents the children were raised at Boles Home for Children in Quinlan, Texas, where they received their christian training and education. Mom was a soloist in the choir, active in sports and excelled in her classes. Mother graduated Boles High School in 1945. Mom passed away peacefully at her home in Conroe, Texas on September 18, 2017.

Following graduation she was visiting with an aunt in Corpus Christi, Texas. This aunt was good friends with Rachel Coates Killen. While visiting Mrs. Killen she met the love of her life, Bennie G. Coates, Sr. According to dad's side of the story it was love at first sight. Lucky for him she said yes and they were married three weeks later on October 21, 1945. They were married for 35 years until his death in December, 1980. They were blessed with two children, Bennie G. Coates, Jr. and Shirley Jean (Coates) Senkel. They were also blessed with four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Lena was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. Her christian life began at Boles Homes and ended as a member of the church family at Longmire Road Church of Christ. She was a fierce patriot and supporter of this nation's military.

Mom is survived by her son, Bennie, his wife Julie, and their children Bennie III, his wife Iliana and; daughter, Jennifer Coates. Two great-grandchildren Ella and Dana Coates, and step-daughter Andrea. She is also survived by her daughter, Shirley, her husband Paul, and her children, John Paul Walker and his wife Carol Ann and; Laurie Walker Leopold and her husband Douglas. Five great-grandchildren, Ryan, Cody and Kaylee Walker and; Brett and Zachery Leopold. Mom is also survived by nephews David Coates, Tommy (Armi) Coates, John (Solange) Coates, James Killen, James Jr. and Lee Killen. Nieces surviving mom are Betty Killen, Rashel (Mike) Zerbe, Laura (Cindy) Coates, Katherine and Kristin Coates, Natalie and Vanessa Coates. Mom was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers.

Metcalf Funeral Directors is handling funeral arrangements. Visitation is at 1:00 pm prior to funeral services beginning at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 22, 2017, at Metcalf Funeral Directors. A private service will be held graveside on Saturday September 23 rd , where mom will be interned at La Rosa Cemetery in Woodsboro, Texas next to dad.
