Major Lester Earl Smith, age 68, took his final flight West on Wednesday, 17 February 2016, passing away in his home in Conroe, Texas. Les was born 24 April 1947 in Ashtabula, Ohio. He graduated from Miami University, where he was later initiated into the Athletic Hall of Fame for his successes as a pole vaulter on the track and field team. As a senior, he won in three national track meets and competed in the 1968 Olympic Trials.

After college, Les served nine years of active duty in the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot and F-4 instructor, then continued serving in the reserves for 12 years. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. Les' civilian career was as a Captain for Continental Airlines. He loved being in the sky and built a life around making that dream. Les was a man who proudly and bravely served his country, loved fiercely, and delighted in making others laugh.

Les was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Vernice Smith and Clifton LeRoy Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Samantha Jowayna Smith, and by his two sisters, Lou M. Johnson and Barbara Smith-Antoline.

Funeral services will be held Monday, 14 March at 10:30 am at the Houston National Cemetery (10410 Veterans Memorial Dr. Houston, TX 77038). Due to space restrictions, his family asks for donations in Les' memory in lieu of flowers. Donations can be made to Wounded Warriors Family Support: www.wwfs.org
