Mary Lee (McBee) Mentz was born in Houston, Texas on August 7, 1930 to Allen Kinsloe and Lena LaVera (Hayes) McBee. The oldest of three girls, she was known to her family as Mimi. Her father was a roughneck for Sun Oil Company, so the family moved frequently in order to follow the drilling rigs. Mary Lee lived in High Island, Anahuac, Humble, and Beaumont, Texas, as well as Thibedeaux, Louisiana while she was growing up. She graduated from South Park High School in Beaumont in 1947. She met her husband, Jack Mentz, during high school, and they were married on June 1, 1949. They had two children, Jackie Lee and Robert Glenn. The family lived in Beaumont, Port Arthur, LaMarque and Houston through the years. Mary Lee considered her main job to be raising her children and taking care of her family, but she also worked as a teacher's aide in various elementary schools in the Spring Branch area of Houston. After her children were grown she joined her husband at his plumbing supply business in Conroe, Texas. They moved to Jewett in 1986, where they had owned property and spent weekends since 1967. Upon retirement in 1998, they were able to relax and enjoy country living.
