Funeral services for Opal Sloan, age 99 formerly of Madisonville, are set for 2:00 pm., Thursday, October 11, 2012 at Madisonville Funeral Home with Lanier Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in the Allphin Cemetery near Midway, Texas. Visitation hours will be from 5 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are Richard Landers, Larry Wakefield, Kenneth Wakefield, Grady Wakefield, John Wakefield and Zac Wakefield. Honorary pallbearers are the Men's Sunday School Class of the First United Methodist Church in Madisonville.

Opal was born on July 21, 1913 in Madison County to Thomas Saxton & Anna Maude (Blackwell) Tarpley. She attended the Sam Houston State Teachers College where she received her Bachelors of Science Degree on August 22, 1938, also a Masters of Education on August 23, 1957 and Administrative Certificate. Opal had moved to Angleton where she lived for 46 years. She was a 3rd grade school teacher for 23 years and a Principal for 23 years while in Angleton. Mrs. Sloan retired in 1977 and returned to Madison County where she lived for many years before moving to the Carriage Inn in Huntsville and late to Elmcroft Assisted Living in Conroe for 6 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Conroe.

She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Sloan Person of Montgomery, Texas; granddaughter, Tracy Rape & husband, Charles of Montgomery, Texas; great grandson, Chad Rape and wife Emily of Sulphur, Louisiana and a sister Margie Ross Tarpley Jones and husband, Ted and was preceded in death by her parents; husband, W. D. "Dub", Sloan in 1999 and a sister, Elma Trapley Wakefield in 1995.
