RICHARD EUGENE SMITLEY died of lung cancer, Sunday October 16, 2011 at home in Shenandoah, TX surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born March 05, 1930 in Licking View, Ohio. He was the third child of Kenneth & Lala Dodson Smitley. Richard was greeted by his granddaughter, Amanda Vonas, his parents, brother, Kenneth, Jr., sister, Beatrice Dawson, and mother-in-law LeElla Wright. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Helen Askew Smitley of 63 years, daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca & Tracy Frazure of Spring, Roxanne & Tommy Jenkins of Sugarland, Rhonda & Nick Vonas of Brookshire, and Regina & Darrell Bond of Shenandoah, sister and husband Gloria Jean and Gene Ping of Spring, sisters-in-law, Marcelle Smitley of Richmond/Rosenberg and Virginia Aske Young of Shenandoah, TX. Surviving also are 12 grandchildren, Melissa, Shannon, Richard, Laney, Elizabeth, Rhea, Suzanne, Jason, Lindsey, Derek, Tiffany and Samantha and 15 great-grandchildren.

Richard and family moved from Zanesville, Ohio in 1943 and came to Houston. Later they moved to La Feria, TX and entered into farming. His father had a trucking company in Ohio and they engaged in trucking again, farmed and raised cattle. In 1961, Richard, Helen & daughters moved to Sharpstown. Richard continued trucking, Helen entered banking and they raised their four daughters there and in the Methodist church. When a man has daughters, Richard would tell people, he got all the love and didn't have to share. Of course, he eventually had to share with his sons-in-law. The love for their father never wavered. They told their dad they knew what their "heavenly father" was like because of his love for them. Richard thought God gives daughters to very "special" men!

The family wishes to thank Christian doctors, Dr. David Mabry, The Woodlands (who Dick loved and respected) for 25 years of great and caring healthcare. MDA doctors: Dr. Merrill Kies, Pamela Schlembach and Angela Coscio for unbelievable compassion, Dr. Jeffrey Chimenti, Dr. Carl Cannon and Dr. Ather Siddiqi of The Woodlands for their knowledge and much needed compassion.

Services will be held in the chapel of Forest Park The Woodlands on Wednesday, October 19, 2011. Visitation and viewing with the family will be held at 2:00 Wednesday with services to follow at 3:00, and a private interment at 4:00.
