After a protracted battle with cancer, Rita Rae Tolan Carthrae Reininger passed on December 2, 2014 at her home in Spring, Texas. Rita was one of three children to father Miton Tolan and mother Fern Tolan, who predeceased her, as well as her brother Gary Tolan. She was born on December 10, 1942 in Hayes, Kansas. She grew up in small towns throughout Kansas with her two brothers; Gary and Rodney along with her cousin Jole'. Rita married her high school sweetheart in Coldwater, Kansas, Ralph Carthrae on May 26, 1962. Shortly after graduation, they relocated to Manhattan, Kansas. During their marriage, moved nine different times while raising their three children until making Texas their home. She leaves behind her three children; her son, Chad Carthrae and wife, Shae Carthrae; her daughters, Chandra Carthrae and Chera Carthrae Johnson and husband, Ben Johnson; her brother, Rod Tolan; and her best friend, Jackie Stulting and her adorable dog, Louie. She also leaves five grandchildren behind Ashley Carthrae (26), Jacee Sinner (20), Morgan Carthrae (11), Jace Johnson (7) and Savannah Grace Johnson (2) and one great-grand child Chloe Carthrae-LeBlanc (2). Red Headed Rita was such an inspiration to so many ~ mostly, she was known for her megawatt smile that lit up a room. She always kept a positive attitude, never spoke ill of others, and loved her children like crazy. Rita was a dedicated Mother to her children, she planned so many parties - too many to count, attended all their activities and used her artistic abilities throughout their childhood and including her grandchildren while adding her own personal style to everything she touched. People came from around the community to visit her antique store Collections, Etc and admire her homemade bows. She had a love for antiques, travel, shopping, the holidays, and sharing time with her close friends. Rita had an unbelievable art of decorating and assembling crafts, as well as entertaining ~ few are blessed with. Rita pursued her dreams at the age of 45 to join Continental Airlines where she was able to travel the world with her family and closest friends. Rita was a driven professional who was loyal to Continental for over twenty years where she retired. When diagnosed with peritoneal cancer in 2009, Rita remained dedicated with a strong determination to fight her illness. She was a brave, iron-willed woman, enduring three different surgeries, four years of continuous chemotherapy and continued to fight even throughout her final months. Rita requested to be cremated. Her ashes will be interred at the family plot in Jetmore, Kansas and also at the choosing of her children. A celebration of life in her honor will be held on Sunday, December 14th at 2:00 pm at Heather's Glen in Conroe, Texas with a reception that will follow. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Michael Bevers and staff for their excellent work and loving care and also to MD Anderson for their constant, attentive treatment. Thank you to Daelynn West for performing mom's service and Jennifer Young for graciously giving the gift of music. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to St. Jude's Children Cancer Center in honor of Rita Tolan Carthrae. We will miss you tremendously ~ until we will meet again in Heaven. Your legacy will continue on throughout your children and grandchildren. We love you, to the Moon and Back Again.
