Ruby Jane Barnes

Obituary
The Guest Book is expired.

Ruby Jane Barnes of Montgomery, Texas (Dacus area), passed away Oct. 24, 2013 in Conroe after a long illness. The daughter of Bennie Gerald Scheffer and Ruby Jane Scheffer -- both deceased -- Jane was born in Pecos, Texas on Aug. 1, 1941, but lived almost all her life in the Greater Houston area. She grew up in the Houston Heights, where she attended Love Elementary, Hamilton Junior High and Reagan High Schools. Jane was mostly self-employed during her working life, and the various businesses she owned brought her into contact with many people. She became a licensed beautician in the early '70s, and owned her own beauty shops in Houston and Livingston. Also in Livingston, she and her late ex-husband, Leon Barnes, owned and ran a barbecue restaurant near the municipal airport. She moved to Montgomery in the early '90s, where she helped care for several elderly relatives in the latter stages of their lives. Jane returned to a working life, and was most widely known in Montgomery for running an embroidery service, Stitched By Nanny Pooh, and later a clothes-and-gifts store, Aunt Mabel's (named after her aunt, although many customers applied the name to Jane, which was fine with her). Jane is survived by one son, Jamie Barnes; three grandsons, Ian Andrew Barnes, Aaron Leon Barnes, and Aidan Cotta, all of Montgomery; brother and sister-in-law Wendell and Donna Klein and of Shiner, Texas; and daughter-in-law Lynnette Barnes of Montgomery. Jane was a member of the Southern Baptist Church. A series of debilitating illnesses since 2008 limited her church, social and professional life, but she was still a central part of her family, and her primary visitors and social contacts in recent years were young people -- her grandsons and their friends -- all of whom fondly knew her by the name, title and legacy she most appreciated: Nanny.

A visitation will be held on Friday, November 1, 2013 in the Chapel of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Montgomery, Texas from 5-7 p.m.
