Frani Scates was born October 1, 1969 in Houston, Texas, and died on April 21, 2017, in Johnson City, Texas.

Frani leaves her children, Zoe Marcelitte Martin and Kenneth Zane Martin; her husband, Eric Strain; her mother, Marion Scates; as well as her brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews: Jennifer Scates, Steve Scates, Jeff Scates, Liz Scates, Leslie Scates, Tisa McCrorey, Ashleigh Scates, Nikolas Becker, Max Hayles, and Ian S. Price.

Frani attended Willis High School, in Willis, Texas, and, after a great deal of hard work, earned a Master of Arts in Counseling from the Graduate School at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Frani worked to help those most in need, as a counselor and as a supervisor to counselors in training. In both public and private institutions, Frani earned and enjoyed a professional reputation as an effective, talented therapist and knowledgeable supervisor.

Frani was courageous, and freely shared her own reserve of courage with many who deeply needed to feel less afraid. She was a champion in clinical and professional arenas that few people dare enter, much less return to day after day, to help others. Frani graced us with love as a mother, a daughter, a friend, a wife, a sister, a gardener, and a professional counselor. She equipped many people to do great things, and helped them realize self-compassion. Her gifts in action were lighting the way for others, and helping them recognize the strengths and pluck they possess. She lit the way for those in crisis, seeing them through to better times and lives.

Frani's two beloved children, her long friendships and many gardens, as well as her love of play and realness, and the hope she inspired in those for whom she cared, were aspects of life she most treasured and cultivated. Frani lived creatively, designing seasonal flower and vegetable gardens, playing coronet in Willis High School's marching band and continuing to make music all along, collecting art, and making friends who surrounded her with love, lifted her up, and lent style to every waking moment. Frani encouraged her children's creativity and individual expression through music, art, unique projects, kooky selfies, and through lots of time in nature and out-of-doors. And she very, very often danced for joy with her children in the living room.
