Thomas Michael Small left this world on November 20, 2017, as he lived in it -- fast, defying odds, peacefully, and surrounded by people who loved him.

Tom was born to Clarice and LeRoy Small in Houston, Texas, on July 17, 1951.

Tom met Catherine Jean Sklar in Conroe, Texas, in 1968. They were high school sweethearts who lived their life together laughing and listening to live music whenever they could. They married in 1972 and just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. They had one daughter, Grace Meredith Small, born in Switzerland in 1981. Tom's career gave him the opportunity to travel the world. He and Catherine called Austin, Texas, home but they also spent time living in the San Francisco Bay Area, California; Fribourg, Switzerland; and Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Running was a passion for Tom. He began running competitively in high school and continued throughout his adult life, winning his age group in many 5 and 10K races. He completed dozens of marathons, countless half-marathons and even one 50k race. Tom qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon and inspired his daughter Meredith to run. They ran one marathon together -- her first and his last.

Tom never met a baby or dog he didn't like and was the proud grandfather to two beautiful children Eva Frances Parnell, age three, and Edward Theodore Parnell, age eight months.

He is survived by his mother Clarice Small of Tomball, Texas; his wife Catherine Small of Austin; Texas, his daughter Meredith Parnell and her wife Harris Parnell and two grandchildren Frankie and Theo Parnell of Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is also survived by his two brothers Richard Small and Douglas Small of Conroe, Texas; his sisters- and brothers-in-law Terri and Al Rabb of Beaumont, Texas, and Tammy and Rick Sklar of Buffalo, Texas; his nieces and nephews Stephanie Presley, Kari Hillin, Jason Small, Brittney Sullivan and Dominic Sklar; his aunt Carolyn Wilkins; as well as cousins, grandnephews and grandnieces.

He was predeceased by his father LeRoy Small; brother David Small; his grandparents Clarence and Grace Wilkins, and Jasper and Susanna Small.

To celebrate Tom's life there will be a memorial gathering in Austin to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Tom's memory to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund or to the Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake.
