Tunis J. Lyon, 88, of Willis, TX & formerly of Itnyre Rd. Smithsburg, MD passed away Tuesday April 17, 2012 at 1145 in Conroe, Tx. Born February 26, 1924 in Grand Rapids, MI; he was the son of the late Louis & Sjoukje (Hofstra) Lyon. He graduated with a BS in Forestry from Michigan State University in 1950. He was employed by the Maryland Department of Forest & Parks, and retird in 1983 as The State Forester. He was a retired 1st Lieutenant of the Air force, and served in World War II as a P38 Lightning pilot, in the 55th Fighter Group, stationed in England. He was shot down over Germany in 1943 and was a POW for one year, returning to Valley Forge PA where he met his wife, Alice Sowers, an RN.

Tunis was devoted to his church, and he had a special bond with his children, his four grandsons, and his great-grandchildren.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing, and creating beautiful furnishings from the wood of The Farm, where they lived for 60 years (he felt the wood spoke to his hands).

He was a member of Friendship Lodge #84, BPOE #378, life member of Morris Frock American Legion Post#42 & life member of the VFW all of Hagerstown, MD; a fellow in the Society of Foresters & a member of St. Peters Beard's Lutheran Church of Smithsburg. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Alice J. (Sowers) Lyon whom he married February 16, 1946, daughter Alice J. (Frank F.) Koller of Willis, TX; son Samuel T. (Sandra) Lyon of Churchville, VA; sister Grace (Donald) Terbeek of MI; grandchildren Frank (Marissa) Koller, Jr., George (Felicitas) Koller, Luke (Betty) Lyon & Garrett Lyon, great-grandchildren Erik Koller, Cari Koller, Samantha Lyon, & many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother John T. Lyon. Services will be held Sunday April 22, 2012 at 1:00 PM at St. Peters Beard's Lutheran Church with Pastor Richard Hembrock officiating. Burial will be in Grindstone Hill Cemetery Chambersburg, PA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the start of the service.
