He was raised on the family farm in southwest Oklahoma in the middle of the great depression with his parents and brother, Hugh. He attended Roosevelt High School where he was a top student and enjoyed basketball and baseball. Walter married his high school sweetheart, and the love of his life, Bonita O. Kimray, on July 4, 1942. They started their life together with nothing but love and were inseparable during 72 years of marriage. Walter enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served as a Seabee in the Pacific theater. After the war, Walt attended the University of Washington, in Seattle, Washington, and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. The early part of Walt's career was spent working for the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) providing power to rural areas throughout the mid-west and as a civilian employee with the Air Force. Walt and Bonnie moved the family to Texas when he began work at NASA in the early 1960's. Walt was involved in the development of the space center and worked on the facilities at NASA until his retirement in the early 1980's. After retiring, Walt and Bonnie spent many happy years on their farm in Willis and then at their home in Conroe. They are long-time members of Conroe First Baptist Church. Over many years, Walt served Christ in many ways as Sunday school teacher, youth sponsor, elder, deacon and building committee member. Walt is preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Mary Ruth Smith, who provided a loving and caring home to grow up in; brother, Hugh Smith and wife Melba; and son-in-law, Jerry Bedell. Walt is survived by Bonnie, his loving wife of 72 years, and their five children: daughter, Janice Krocker and husband Dan and their children, Joe and Michael; son, Rodney Smith and wife Renee and their children, Kelly and wife Kristin and Nikki Rapelje and husband Brandon; son Dr. Clete Smith; son, Mark Smith and wife Jerri and their children, Sara and Kevin; daughter, Julie Bedell and her children, Blake and Casey; and two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Madeleine; and numerous other relatives and friends. Walt loved his family deeply and their welfare was always his number one concern. Walt led a fruitful life, leaving to his family a legacy of love and a love of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
