The Guest Book is expired.

William "Bill" McCargo Barnes, 87, was born on June 10, 1929 and passed away peacefully with family by his side on April 12, 2017.

Bill was well known for his quick wit, sharp mind, deep compassion and devotion to his family and friends. He was an accomplished writer and loved sharing critiques with fellow authors. His letters-to-the-editor on political topics are legendary.

Bill earned his degree in Petroleum Geology from Sul Ross University. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served 2 years in the Counter Intelligence Corps in San Antonio, TX. After his military service, he started his career in Geology with Standard Oil and Gas in Midland, TX. His career took him to several cities in Texas for Pan American, Amoco, Mitchell Energy, Westland Oil and he eventually formed his own company in 1980. Those in the oil industry respected him as a brilliant and honorable geologist, and he was still actively involved in the field at the end of his life.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother and father, Thelma and William Turner Barnes. He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret, with whom he shared an extraordinary 61 year marriage; his daughter Libbie Vaughan, son-in-law Glenn Vaughan and grandsons Jackson and Cameron Vaughan of Missouri City, TX; and nieces Gail Bradley of Dallas, TX and Phyllis Miles of Pearland, TX.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 14 at 11:00 AM at Conroe Funeral Directors Chapel, 1504 N. Thompson St., Conroe, TX, with a viewing at 10:00 AM and interment to follow at Forest Park The Woodlands Cemetery.

Bill's family would like to thank Seasons Hospice for their loving care as he made his transition.
