Zulema Gutierrez Snell passed away on January 9 th 2017 in Houston Texas. She was 76 yrs. old and suffered illness for several years. Zulema was born on August 10, 1940 in Pierdes Negras, Coahuila Mexico to Maria Garcia and Jose Maria Gutierrez.

Zulema Gutierrez grew up in Eagle Pass, Texas. She was very close to her brother Jose (pepe) and her cousin Margarita (Maggie) Garcia. The trio was inseparable and in later years they spent hours sharing their antics with family. Zulema then attended Eagle Pass High School and was elected a member of the Eagle Pass High School Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. This honor was not only based on her academic acumen, but also her superior leadership qualities and service. Zulema graduated as salutatorian for her class and honed her skills as a typist and stenographer. After high school she and Maggie moved to San Antonio in search of lucrative positions, and eventually both found employment with Kelly Airforce Base. This position changed her life because after working in San Antonio, this small town girl decided to accept a position in Washington D.C. and later worked abroad.

During the 1960's, Zulema traveled through Europe and Latin America working with the American Embassies. While in San Salvador, Zulema met Philip Wayne Snell and the couple married in a civil ceremony on July 26, 1966, followed later by a Catholic Church Wedding. After a stint in Portugal, the couple returned to Washington DC and then moved to Colorado. In the 1970s they moved to Mission, Texas and Zulema worked with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), while Phil worked as a consultant and operated a grapefruit orchard. By the 1990s, the couple moved to Houston and both eventually worked for the DEA. Zulema received numerous accommodations from the DEA for her work excellence. She later retired from the DEA and was able to follow her passion as an artist. Zulema had taken classes in Mission and participated in several artist shows. She also painted numerous pictures for family and friends.

Phil soon followed Zulema in retirement and the couple enjoyed their free time to develop their interests, until she fell ill. Philip cared for Zulema until his death on August 3, 2016. Zulema was taken to a nursing home where she passed away five months later.

Zulema is survived by her brother Jose de Jesus Gutierrez of Conroe, Texas. She had a half-brother Pedro Guedea (deceased), a half-sister Amelia Guedea Nelson and another half-brother Rolando Guedea. She is also survived by numerous cousins including Margarita Garcia Moncada of San Antonio, several nieces including Cecilia Gutierrez Venable of El Paso, Delia Korzen McCoy and a nephew Joseph Michael Gutierrez, both from Chicago.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Hospital.
