Mary Ellen Stewart Obituary
Mary Ellen Stewart

Pennsauken - Mary Ellen Stewart (nee Hogan), 85, passed away at her home on August 7, 2018. She was a woman of faith, family, and so many friends. Mary Ellen was born on May 5, 1933. She is preceded in death by her parents, Rose and James Hogan; two brothers James and John; sister Claire Riley; and husband Richard. Mary Ellen was the beloved wife of the late Richard Earl Stewart; devoted mother of Rosemarie (William) Farmer, Betsy (Thomas Macphee) Messina, and Richard (Eve) Stewart; loving Mom-mom of Daniel (Joanna) Quaintance, Bridget (Scott) Molony, Mia (Stephen) Zafarino, Michael Messina, Grace Stewart, Rose Stewart, Thomas (Erin) Macphee, Christopher (Jamie) Macphee, Matthew (Amanda) Farmer and Allison Farmer; and Great-grand mom of Grayson Quaintance, Jill, Aubrie, Summer, and Izzabella Molony, Luca Zafarino, Grant Macphee, and Henrik and Hanna Farmer. Born in Camden, Mary Ellen grew up in Merchantville the youngest of four - her siblings nicknamed her "Ripper" for what was described as her curiosity and mischievous behavior. The name remained with her throughout her entire life - friends called her Rip and nieces and nephews called her Aunt Ripper. Eventually, Mary Ellen moved to Pennsauken where she and her husband raised their three children. She was a lifetime parishioner of St. Peter's Church, devout member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and spent her life serving both the Church and School in some capacity. She was a member of the Auxiliary Board and volunteer at St. Mary's Home for the Aged for twenty-five years. Mary Ellen was the quintessential caregiver; taking care of her mother Rose, mother-in-law Ruth, and the love of her life, her husband Dick as each faced their own enormity of disease in their later years. Mary Ellen was devoted to her family and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She lived a simple life as an elegant woman. She enjoyed reading, dancing with her husband, lunch with her girlfriends, driving her Honda Fit, and most of all -- visits with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation will take place on Monday, August 13, 2018 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Schetter Funeral Home, 304 Marlton Pike West, Cherry Hill, NJ, 08002. A Mass of Christian Burial will occur the following day, Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 10:00am, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 43 West Maple Avenue, Merchantville, NJ, 08109. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Lighthouse Hospice (Patty, Mary, and Lisa) and Always There (Victoria and Doris) for their support in her final months.
