Peter A. Johnston

Cherry Hill - Peter A. Johnston, age 72, of Cherry Hill, NJ passed away surrounded by his loving family June 11, 2018 after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Michele (nee Tinneny) and his cherished children: Megan, Lisa, Peter, Jr. (Stephanie), Shannon and Jennifer (Phillip) Chester, and 5 grandchildren. Also survived by his brothers: Michael (and the late Denise), Chris (Nening) and Lou, III (Kim), and sisters, Dwynne (Don) Casey and Kathy Johnston, and several nieces and nephews.

Pete grew up in Oaklyn where his passion and skill for basketball began at an early age. He went on to play at Bishop Eustace Preparatory School where he was a member of the recently inducted Hall of Fame 1961 and 1962 Parochial State Championship teams. He received a scholarship to play at Mt. St. Mary's Univ. Soon after graduation he started his 39 year dedicated career at Bishop Eustace as a basketball coach and guidance counselor. He was the assistant coach for the 1969 team which compiled a 26-0 record on their way to the Parochial State Championship. In 1969 when Joe O'Connor was named 'Coach of the Year' he was quoted in the Courier Post saying that Pete had made a significant contribution to the team's success. Pete also operated the Azure Driving School for more than 20 years. Through it all Pete also enjoyed his many friends, playing cards and golfing, especially with his regular crew. His greatest joy always remained his family and his role as husband, father and grandfather.
