Dr. Teresa Benzwie

Cherry Hill - 83 years, passed peacefully in her home Saturday, June 30. Dr. Benzwie is pre-deceased by her parents, Eugene and Paula Herzman, and is survived by her three sons, Lawrence Bender, Craig Bender and his wife Kelly, Robert Bender and his wife Christina, her cousin Stephen Koplin and his wife Barbara, and her grandchildren Briana, Sophia, Ellis, Violet and Misha Bender.

Beginning with teaching kindergarten in Camden and continuing with her Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) from Temple University, Dr. Benzwie was a pioneer in her field of movement education by combining dance and movement with teaching children their core subjects. She continued her career instructing future teachers in her methods. She created a documentary based on her teaching methods and published multiple books including A Moving Experience, More Moving Experiences, and Alphabet Movers. As a licensed social worker and therapist, Dr. Benzwie's practice, The Center for Creative Change, worked with children and adults using creative movement and play.

Her recent passion was exploring spiritual awareness and animal interaction via dancing with horses. As recently as last year, she performed with her favorite horse Pegasa and a dance group that specialized with horses.

A Memorial Service and lunch will be held on Saturday, July 6th at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Cherry Hill at 401 Kings Highway North, Cherry Hill, at 11:00 am. All are welcome. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to "Majoda Stables" to benefit Equine Assisted Experimental Learning.

Teresa was the finest woman I have known and, given where I am on this journey, I will have known. She was kind, energetic, empathetic, intelligent and curious. She was relentless about finding something good about nearly everyone and every occurrence. I have thought about her many times during the decades that lapsed since I last saw her. That will not cease. Her journey was a good one. Now, she can rest.

We met Teresa years ago when our daughter was diagnosed with alopecia. Tomorrow would have been her birthday if my memory serves me correctly. Through the internet I thought I would try and locate her after all these years. It saddened me to see her name come up as an obituary. It was truly a blessing to have her be a part of our lives way back when. With heartfelt sympathy to her friends and family.

I am saddened to hear this news. I took a class at Temple's Ambler campus in the late 70's when she was still Terry Bender. What a class! What a woman! What an inspiration! Temple, the community, the children, and the world have lost a truly great person.

Dr. Benzwie's contributions to Barclay Early Childhood Center helped to enrich not only the students with whom she worked, but the staff as well. Dr. Benzwie expressed an interest in the work of our Green Team and her creativity yielded a book entitled Have Apples- Will Move. This book was shared not only with the teachers of Barclay, but also with all Kindergarten teachers throughout Cherry Hill.
The entire Barclay staff sends our condolences to Dr. Benzwie's family.

It saddened me to learn of Teresa's death. All of us who knew her professionally loved her!
Teresa's "vision"of movement inspired many people. Teresa's book "Movement Principles" became a constant reference for my own Creative Dance and Improvisational teaching. So grateful for her work....
Luckily, I have seen Teresa through the years, most recently @Pilates Core Center in Cherry Hill. I remember thinking when we met again that she really hadn't changed. She still had that vibrant personality and great energy. AND she began our conversation as she always did:
talking about "Her Boys". She loved and cared about you deeply....may you keep her love with you....
I am so glad to have known your Mother, she was special!
Sincerely, Carole Gorman-Swift
