I recently learned of Bob's passing and am truly saddened. He created a fantastic portrait of the Coast Guard's sail training ship Eagle for my Academy class of 1962, sponsored by the class of 1950. A truly nice man and a great artist.

I learned only yesterday of Bob's passing and am belatedly expressing my heartfelt condolences to Phyllis and the Semler family. Bob's beautiful paintings of the SS United States perfectly captured the strength and spirit of "America's Flagship" and they lifted my own spirits when the quest to save the ship from the scrapyard seemed daunting. Now that plans for the ship's resurrection continue to advance, Bob's spirit (and art) will be with the ship as her journey continues full speed ahead. We remain forever grateful for Bob's gorgeous art and wish him nothing but fair winds and following seas. - Susan Gibbs, President, SS United States Conservancy

The world has lost a talented, decent man. I knew him in the 50's. Paint those pictures in Heaven, Bob - God needs your talent.

My heartfelt condolences to the Semler family. I had worked with Bob on the ASMA News & Journal for the past ten years. Though we never met in person our conversations were colorful, insightful and a joy. We talked about the printing and graphic design industry, Packer football and his family. May he rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy on Bob's death. He was a good friend to my father George Vail and they spent many hours together in the carriage house at the Mansion. Bob painted a picture of me at 16 years old and it's one of my most treasured possessions. He was so very talented, but most of all he was a kind and caring man.

Bob was one of the nicest individuals I had an opportunity to work with at the Courier-Post. His interests were multi-faceted and he was a perfectionist in each. His oil paintings were equal to looking at life itself. Bob taught me many things during our working relationship and a dear friend I will never forget. My condolences to the Semler family.
