Carl McGraw Wallace
Evansville, IN - Carl McGraw Wallace, 96, of Evansville passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Born in Union County, KY, on April 5, 1924 to James and Maude Wallace. Carl spent most of his youth growing up in Fort Branch, IN. Carl was the last surviving child of their nine children.
Carl was drafted into the Navy during his senior year of high school and he served on the USS Intrepid in the Pacific until the end of WWII. Following the war, Carl met the love of his life, Virginia Dassel, and they were married for 68 years.
Carl will be remembered for his jokes, his big heart, and his gift of gab. After their marriage, Carl worked in sales before he and Virginia bought and ran The Old Mill Restaurant. Carl also later worked with the Veterans Administration and was associated with the Evansville Triplets.
Carl was an active member of the Westside Nut Club, VFW, and the American Legion. One of his most cherished endeavors was when he helped co-found Wish Upon a Star, now Granted, an organization that grants wishes for sick children.
Carl is survived by many nieces and nephews and by a sister-in-law.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at St. Philip Catholic Church, Rev. Ryan Hilderbrand officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit with the family from 9:00 AM until service time on Thursday at St. Philip Catholic Church, 3500 S. St. Philip Road, Mt. Vernon, IN 47620.
