Charles Culmer Leggett Iii Obituary
Charles Culmer Leggett III

Evansville, Ind. - Charles Culmer Leggett III, 95, passed away Monday, December 16, 2019, at Linda E. White Hospice House.

Charlie Leggett was a true son of Evansville, Indiana. He was born August 14, 1924, to Charles C. Leggett, Jr and Viola Burckel Leggett, and, after his mother was stricken with tuberculosis in 1926, was raised by his adoring grandparents, Charles C. and Jeannette Ranes Leggett. They instilled in him the core values of hard work and integrity that would characterize the essence of the man who worked in the family business for 77 years.

And they provided him with unconditional love and a firm foundation for the building of his own blended family comprised of five children and nine grandchildren.

Charlie's greatest passions were the joy of raising his family and his dedication to running his business, Automotive Wholesalers. As a proud member of the former Evansville Jaycees, he served a term as president and later enjoyed the gatherings of the Jaycees Old-Timers group. He loved the company of friends, listening to Big Band music, dancing the jitterbug, and enjoying a Manhattan (always with a cherry!). He was a life-long athlete, encouraging his children to follow his love of swimming, tennis, and other athletic pursuits. He took particularly great joy in recounting his days on the field at Central High School where he was standout football player.

Charlie was a wonderful teacher. The kids credit their skills in chess, ping pong, and diving to their dad's instruction. He believed in "old school" values like hard work, independence and honesty and instilled those values in his children and employees.

Charlie was also a life-long learner. As their children grew and traveled far from home, Charlie and Frankie loved visiting them and meeting their friends in far-flung corners of the world. Charlie was always a "people person", and through these experiences he found he was able to connect with people whose outlooks and lifestyles were different from anything he had ever known. His eyes were opened, and he willingly and easily made new friends and embraced new points of view.

Charlie loved his life, his family, his community, and his many good friends of all ages. We will miss him terribly.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, his first wife, Dorothy Hawkins Leggett, his son Charles Allen Leggett and his brother, William T. Leggett.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances (Frankie) Pasley Leggett, his daughters Jann Leggett Hickey (Eddie), Paula Leggett Chase (David), Maria Leggett, and Cheryl Leggett Da Silva. His grandchildren: Michelle Leggett Anton, Jennifer Hickey, Alan Leggett, Jill Hickey Howard, Kyler and Dashiell Chase, Isadora and Fransabelle Da Silva, and Paige Leggett Creamer, plus three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 5130 Lincoln Ave., Evansville, IN 47715, on Saturday, January 18, 2020, at 2:00 pm with visitation at 1:00 pm in the church atrium.

Contributions to the memory of Charlie may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
