Arthur P. Leiss, 84, died on December 9, 2012 surrounded by his family. A near lifetime resident of Fairfield, Mr. Leiss is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sylvia Gernert Leiss, two daughters, Susan Romatzick and her husband Billy of Stratford, CT, Sandra Templeton and her husband Paul of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and his son, Mark Leiss and his wife Jamie of Far Hills, NJ. He leaves 9 grandchildren, Jeffrey (Alicia) Romatzick, Tom (Rose) Romatzick, Greg (Lizette) Romatzick, Sarah Templeton, Emily Templeton, John Templeton, Avery Leiss, Theodore Polito, and Sam Polito, and 5 great-grandchildren, Emma, Jeffrey, Grace, Amy, and Oliver Romatzick. He is also survived by his sister Marcia Brendel of Louisville, KY and her three children. Art graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School (1946) and Michigan State University. He served in the Army, attending Officers Candidate School at Fort Riley, Kansas then serving with the 14th Armored Calvary. He received his law degree at The University of Connecticut, and served as legal counsel to General Motors Acceptance Corporation in New York City. He then for worked twenty-two years in legislative affairs with General Electric in Stamford, CT.
In addition, he was a member of the law firm of Miller, Bent & Smith in Bridgeport, CT, and a partner with Nikse & Leiss in Newtown, CT. Art was an avid horseman all his life. As a youth, he trained and rode hunters and jumpers for various owners at horse shows in CT and NY. In his later years, Art owned his own horses and loved hunting and riding with Fairfield County Hounds, Bull Run Hunt in Culpepper, VA, and also abroad in England and Ireland.
Art loved children and those in his family will remember the strange and silly games "Poppa" would devise for them to play. He touched many lives, made many friends, and will always be remembered with love and devotion by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church, 1045 Old Academy Road, Fairfield. Interment will be private.
