Broad, Robert F.
Robert F. Broad, 88, of Wentworth Location, passed away on Monday morning, Nov. 7, 2016, at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook after a long period of failing health.
He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on Oct. 27, 1928, a son to the late Franklin L. and Margaret (Gilmore) Broad. Robert was raised and educated in Connecticut.
In his early adult life, he ran an automobile service station in Huntington, Conn., but Robert was always an avid and enthusiastic outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish, and he enjoyed always having a boat in the water, both salt and fresh water. During vacation times, Robert had always enjoyed coming north to hunt and fish in the Umbagog area. Upon retiring in 1977, his family moved north permanently, and he started his second career as the owner and operator of the Brown Owl Camps, and he became a licensed fishing guide and sporting goods store owner. Robert and his wife were known far and wide for their camp hospitality. He was a master fly-tyer, and is credited with inventing the "Brown Owl fly," known nation-wide now and credited with catching several trophy fish. He also enjoyed snowmobiling and loved to groom the trails for the Umbagog Sports Assn., of which he was also a member. He was a compassionate caregiver to his wife and his son, Ronald, for many years.
Robert leaves behind four sons, Allan Broad of Wentworth Location, NH, Ralph Broad of Errol, NH, Louis Broad and wife Susan of Londonderry, NH, and David Broad of Manchester, NH; and four grandchildren. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Dolores (Mitchell) Broad, two sons, Robert M. Broad, and Ronald J. Broad, and a sister, Florence Imre.
Calling hours will be on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. A funeral service will be held the next morning, Fri., Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at the Errol Congregational Church in Errol, NH. Burial will immediately follow in the Wilson's Mills Cemetery.
