Charles R. Ertle, Jr.
Charles R. Ertle, Jr., 89 of Stratford, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 17, 2018. He was born in Bridgeport to the late Charles and Anna (Sullivan) Ertle and was a lifelong area resident. He was the beloved brother of the late Margaret Poulsen and Rita D'Elia.
Charles was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He received his degree from the University of Bridgeport and retired from AVCO after many years as a mechanical engineer.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially playing tennis, hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and spending time at his beach homes in Lordship and West Palm Beach.
Charles is survived by his nephews, Carl R. Poulsen of Fairfield and his dear friend, Catherine Winters, Marc C. Poulsen of Fairfield, Charles D. Poulsen and his wife, Jennifer of Oxford. He will also be missed by his niece, Valerie D'Elia of NYC, his nephews, Paul and Daniel D'Elia of Virginia and by his cousin, Mary Toth and her daughter, Peggy of Fairfield.
Friends may greet his family on Sunday, May 20, 2018 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Rd. in Fairfield Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 21, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. directly at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Fairfield. Interment with military honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
Charles' family would like to express their deep gratitude for the care provided to him by his caretaker, Fay Bonner and her husband, Ren as well as to all his wonderful neighbors and friends.
